American consumers would rather refuse huge sums of cash than go without their favourite convenience foods such as pizzas and tacos, according to new research.
A study by the American Heart Association found that 40 per cent of adults polled would not give up their favourite comfort foods, with the other respondents saying they would not do so for any less than $100,000.
However, the Cash or Cupcakes? study also found that three-quarters of consumers are taking steps to make their diet healthier by altering their favourite foods and removing unhealthy ingredients or replacing them with others.
'Because we know people are motivated to eat healthier, the American Heart Association is committed to providing realistic and meaningful tools that are needed to make better choices,' said Linda Van Horn chair of the American Heart Association's Nutrition Committee, and professor of preventive medicine at Northwestern University.
'And, we know that many people are on their way to better health.'
Last week, Michelle Obama told attendees at a meeting of the Grocery Manufacturers Association that industry giants should reduce their use of food ingredients such as fat, sugar and salt which can be damaging to health.
